Recently I was lucky enough to interview global Twitter marketing expert Madalyn Sklar. Madalyn was one of the first influencers I connected with when I started my social media journey, so it was a pleasure to be able to interview her. Her secret sauce for Twitter success taught me all my favourite Twitter tactics.

Madalyn is an expert in the field. She is Houston’s No 1 social media influencer and the host of popular Twitter chat #TwitterSmarter and the #TwitterSmarter podcast, which has been heard in over 112 countries. When I was a guest on her #TwitterSmarter tweetchat, we explored tips for growing your business with Twitter marketing.

Here are the top three tips I took away from our chat. “They’re very basic, but they work,” says Madalyn, and I couldn’t agree more.

1) Make time to listen to your audience

“When you go on Twitter, you should just listen to conversations,” she advises.

“See what’s going on, take it all in first so you can get an idea of what’s being said, who’s doing the talking and seek out people you’re interested in talking to.

“Find an opportunity to jump into the conversation, but it really starts with listening first.”

A fantastic way to listen in a time-efficient manner is to create Twitter lists for your chosen influencers, content sources, prospective customers, people you would like to work with, specific hashtags and trendsetters. If you tune in regularly, you’ll soon know what your audience is most interested in.

You can make the lists private or public, and while this will take a bit of time to research and set up, it will save you a lot of time in the long term and make it really easy to join in with the right conversations.

2) Engage, engage AND engage

“Engaging is so important, but you want to listen first because what too many people do is hop onto social media and just start pushing out content,” says Madalyn.

“They’re not really engaging so much, they’re just saying, ‘Go read my article. Go listen to my podcast. Go buy my book. Go buy my course.’

“Until people know, like, and trust you, they’re not going to buy from you. We all know this because we all get bombarded with these types of selling tweets and posts all over social media. If we don’t know the person, are we going to buy their products? No.

“That’s why you should listen first and then start engaging and talking to people. Twitter chats are a great way to do that. Get to know people and let them get to know you.

“If you have a really great profile, with a good bio and a good image, people will go there as you’re engaging. They’re going to say, ‘Well, who is this Madalyn Sklar and why should I talk to her?’

“They’re going to look at my profile, and I spent a lot of time working on having a good profile: it has my bio on there, it has a link to my website, and it has a good photograph. These things will help them get to know, like, and trust me better. That’s really important.”

It’s sometimes challenging to find time to schedule great content that your audience will love, as well as commit to daily engagement. Use scheduling tools like Hootsuite, Buffer or ContentCal to automate some of your content and free up time for real-time engagement.

It’s so important to make time for this daily engagement. I always recommend you should enjoy the social element of your social media management.

In my new vlog series, WUNDERBAR The German Marketing Efficiency Show (coming soon), I recommend that you turn off your email notifications to avoid getting distracted and schedule 2 time slots a day to go on Twitter and acknowledge all of your notifications, as well as start conversations with new people.

3) Have more fun with your Twitter marketing

“Why do all this if you’re not having fun?,” asks Madalyn.

“This is a journey, have fun with it. When I’m on social media I’m always looking for cool and exciting people to align myself with, so that’s the ‘having fun’ part.

“I think these are really basic, basic tips, but really profound.”

Madalyn’s words really resonated with me as I am also a huge believer in having fun with your social media and marketing in general and strive to convey that message through Lollipop Social’s own marketing. One of my brand values is that I am surprisingly funny for a German. So on Twitter, I inject a sense of humour into my posts and use gifs and emojis.
